Democracy in Political Corporate Social Responsibility: A Dynamic, Multilevel Account

Political corporate social responsibility (PCSR) calls for firms to implement and engage in deliberative democracy processes structures, addressing governance gaps where governments are unwilling or unable do so. However, an underlying assumption that the implementation of PCSR will enrich democratic society has been exposed challenged. In this conceptual article, we explore challenge by developing a framework reveal dynamics firms’ structures (meso level), those at nation state (macro level). Using existing cases as illustrative examples, demonstrate despite public good premise theory toward thickening overall society, democratization meso level can have opposite effect may actually erode macro-level control economy. These findings imply need multilevel analysis research greater consideration state-level institutions responsibilities business institutions. Furthermore, contribute literature identifying disruptive mechanisms associated with these outline two alternative perspectives allow continue take on political responsibilities.
